Reviews of Hotel Rey Juan Carlos I

We chose the hotel mostly because it had a swimming pool, and we were pleasantly surprised. We had a large room on the 8th floor with a good view and wonderful bath and shower. We chose to have 2 single beds side by side so lots of room. Do take the breakfast option when booking - it includes as much of everything as you want: cooked (eggs, sausage, bacon, spanish omelette etc), cereals, toast, fresh fruit (eg strawberries, cherries, melon slices, pineapple pieces etc), coffee, tea, juice etc etc.

The free swimming pool was very good too - including a shallow pool for young children - towels supplied too.

We were worried at first that we were too far out of town - at the end of metro line 3 (Zona Universitaria) but the station was only a 5 min walk away and the train took about 15 mins to reach the centre. By the way the hotel is just off Avenue Diagonal so the address is a bit misleading. Leave the metro at the Avenue Diagonal exit and as you emerge you can see the hotel up to the left, behind the conference centre of Catalunya.

Perhaps the only downside for us was that there were no local restaurants for evening meals and the hotel only had one restaurant open from 8.30pm which was quite expensive so we made sure we ate in town before returning to the hotel.
Enjoy your trip!

My husband and I stayed at your hotel for a night before we joined our cruise boat from Barcelona in May.

We had a lovely stay.  Your hotel is beautiful,  the view from the room was fantastic and we appreciated the small sweet touches like the strawberries in our room. At breakfast, we had the best orange juice we have ever tasted – how do you do that??
Just a mail here to say thank you and that you and your team are doing a terrific job. Definitely staying with you next time we are in Barcelona.

Bhavna Talwar,

God is in the detail!

Architect and friend of Barcelona, Mies van der Rohe, is reputed as having coined the phrase "God is in the detail." This phrase would have to apply to Rey Juan Carlos I Hotel. From the embroidered monogrammed bedding; the delicate touch that is required to operate the lift; the turn-down service; to the aftercare team emailing you back to thank you for completing their feedback form; the standards are exemplary.
The breakfasts were ample and I tried the Polo Restaurant. The buffet was probably one of the tastiest and varied I have come across, and the chef needs to be congratulated on the delicate and delectable desserts on offer.
The gym too is situated in a fresh and clean building. Remember to bring a swimming cap, as this is mandatory to use the pool. There are also spa facilities at an extra cost.
The conference centre is a couple of minutes walk across the hotel garden, taking away the hassle of travelling. The underground is a few minutes walk from the hotel and will takes about 30 minutes to get to central Barcelona.
Usually I have a preference for smaller boutique hotels, but on this occasion and especially as I was attending a conference, I was left enamoured with this hotel.

A very enjoyable stay

Had a very enjoyable stay, this was our 40th wedding anniversary so it had to be special, and it really was.

The room was great

My boyfriend and I visited this hotel for two nights in May, and got an excellent rate through Expedia.

Don't be put off by the grey tower block - the hotel interior and facilities are absolutely lush, in particular the pools, spa and fitness area which were lovelier than any other I've been to (even my expensive London gym). Its worth the stay just to use those facilities, especially on a hot hot day when you are sticky and sweaty after sightseeing.

It's about 15-20 minutes into the centre of Barcelona by bus or metro from the Avenue Diagonal, and even after a big night out (in La Ribera - definitely preferable to the tacky Las Ramblas), we managed to find a bus home at 2am.

The room was great - a massive bed, huge windows with a great view of Barcelona, and the most amaaaazing shower I can remember.

My only advice - if you are not made of money, bring your own drinks and snacks for the room, and eat out locally rather than at the hotel. Each room has a minibar but - phew - costs started with a small pack of Pringles at 7 euros! Breakfast (which we ate out at a little cafe) was extortionate - 16 euros for a fruit platter, 5 euros for cereal and milk. Enough said. But we brought our own Pringles (we are v classy like that...!) and were more than happy squeezing our bottle of wine into the minibar fridge.

I would definitely stay here again next time we visit Barcelona, if only for the splendid pool, lovely gardens and excellent spa.

Thank you!

I wanted to extend my thanks to all of you for being such valuable partners to us for the Genesys conference.  your flexibility and understanding during these difficult times was greatly appreciated.

The hotel did a great job throughout the conference, and it was truly a pleasure working with you - the conference was very successful, and the Hotel Rey Juan Carlos is absolutely beautiful.  We hope to return again soon with another group.

On behalf of all of us at One World, many thanks for your valued partnership.

Great hotel for conferences

I stayed at Rey Juan Carlos I for a conference. The service is excellent: Friendly (and lots of) staff. The rooms are very clean, lots of towels, shampoos etc in the bathroom. Lots of hot water which stay the same temperature during your shower.

The infosystem on the tv didn't work, but who uses that?

Wireless everywhere, and ethernet plug in rooms. A bit slow, and too expensive: 20 Euros a day!! It really should be free on a hotel like this.

Amazing lobby. Worth a visit alone.

Nice conference rooms with good chairs.

Funny that they send a maid to your room at about 18:00 in the afternoon to take of the cover on your bed!

The Leading Hotels of the World - the new image of Barcelona! Spectacular!

Our fourth time in Spain and our first time in Barcelona, Folks! Well done! We had flown from Dublin with BMI - British Midlands - to London-Heathrow ( T1 ) and from London-Heathrow ( T3 ) - to Barcelona El Prat International ( Term. B ) with Iberia and same return to Dublin after our superb weekend in Barcelona at this truly spectacular Hotel. And so it goes, Folks! The Taxi from El Prat Int. to the hotel was 21 Euros and had taken around 15 minutes time and return from the hotel to El Prat Int. was 23 Euros and again 15 minutes depending on traffic as you would expect. A magnificent building to behold, this was the first ever image of this hotel and it had taken it's hold in our memory. We were greeted in the massive and beautiful Atrium by an fast and efficient check-in, welcome drinks ( Bellini Cava Cocktails for two ) in the Aris Bar which we have taken after 18:00 PM in the clubby atmosphere of this Lobby located Bar. The Cocktails had been delicious. At the Aris Bar smoking is permitted. We had a personal welcome by our host named Raquel, she has given us explanation about the hotel, restaurants and all functions in our superb Deluxe Double room - nr. 1031 - on the tenth floor with views over the magnificent Tennis club and the mountainous surroundings beyond. The Bellboy delivered our luggage within two minutes of arrival in our superb room and again he explained to us the functions in the room. Service to be proud of! Our room was large, fantastic design, superb twin beds with allergy pillows as requested. We had the hotel booked via LHW.COM - because the hotel is also a member of The Leading Hotels of the World! Ltd. and the General Manager Mr. Roberto Torregrosa was awarded the best Hotel manager in Spain in 2008, and it show' s, Folks! OK, back to our room - nr. 1031 - we had a large Philips Plasma LCD TV with many international channels on offer incl. spanish, saudi arabian, french ( Canal + ), Bloomberg TV, American Fox News, CNN, BBC World News, Eurosport, Sky News, German Channels, MTV, Italian channels, Al Jazeera Arabic news channel and many others... Also services on offer incl. 24 h room-service, laundry-service and the rather comprehensive - always welcome - Questionaire. The Bathroom, Folks! Right here, Right now! All in all the bathroom was just perfect, a combination of relaxation and modernity plus the luxury of time for oneself! Overall the hotel Rey Juan Carlos, The First can be described as AWSOME in every sense of the word. ... We could eat for hours there! The Surroundings outside of the hotel are equally awsome incl. stables, superb gardens, private lake with swans - black and white - pathways, Royal Fitness club, superb children' s playground, The Garden Restaurant, The Spa, massive Swimming-pools and, and, and! Fantastic all the way. This hotel is just amazing in every respect it is named after the King of Spain and it was opened by the King of Spain plus a large portrait in the Atrium from the King of Spain as the eyes and ears of the hotel, managed by Husa Hoteles of Spain! Highly recommended! By the way, Newspapers from around the world are available which incl. Papers from Japan, USA and Brazil and many many more priced at 3 Euros each. Every other paper can be found by hotel from the employees when not available in the hotel. Amazing! So do not forget: FLY,STAY,EXPLORE! MORE! do it now and right!

fantastic spa and great architecture

Looking at most of the reviews on tripadvisor you would think that the hotel would be terrible, one would assume that the people giving bad reviews probably usually book themsevles into the local Palace as opposed to a good hotel and the "quality" of RJC is just not up to thier "usual standards".

I say ignore them and give this place a go, it's great.

Being a member of the leading hotels of the world leaders club myself, i have stayed in many of their properties and this one is no different to what i've come to expect.

The spa facility is one of the best i've visited, with no end of saunas, solariums and plunge pools, the indoor pool is fantastic and the outdoor pool nice and warm. [On a side line, one of the reviewers below that mentioned that you had to buy pool shoes neglected to mention that they only cost 2 euros, if you didn't think to use the complimentary slippers from your room!!!]

Breakfast is great and i can understand the comment about "not too great a selection" if you are used to the sunday brunch at the bellagio in las vegas but otherwise it is quite acceptable with every item i could think of to choose from.

Yes, i would say that the hotel is a decent way from the centre of barcelona but in any big city you are going to struggle to find a large modern, spacious hotel set in gardens right in the centre. We did all the main attractions using the underground which is located about 200 yards from the hotel and takes you direct to las ramblas in about 15 minutes door to door with no problem at all. Infact it was nice to get out of the town and into a quiet outdoor pool at the end of each day.

Finally, i must say that the staff were brilliant and did everything to help us when we needed it and the always did it with a smile on their face.

Forget the moaners and give it a try.
